Allstate Sugar Bowl to Sponsor Class 5A Region III Tennis Tournament

The Allstate Sugar Bowl will sponsor the 2010 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 5A Region III Tennis Tournament this Wednesday and Thursday at the University of New Orleans Tennis Courts (6500 Press Dr.). It is the second year that the Sugar Bowl has sponsored the event which crowns the region's top boys and girls tennis teams and individuals. The region consists of teams from the Bayou region of Louisiana and the South-shore Metro New Orleans area.
Action begins on Wednesday at 9 a.m. with quarterfinal matches slated for approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday action continues at 9 a.m. with championship matches expected to start at noon.
On the boys' side, Jesuit is favored to repeat as regional champion with Assumption, Brother Martin and Rummel expected to push the Blue Jays. Rummel standout Brock Turnbull returns to defend the boys singles title. However, Zach Marroy, from Assumption, was a semifinalist last year and will be eyeing the singles title. Jesuit is led by standout freshman Hobie Hotard while Joshua Marx will be Brother Martin's top singles player. The top boys doubles teams this year include Michael Ourso and Jonathan Comeaux (Assumption), Andrew Crespo and Taylor LeBon (Brother Martin), Paul Mickan and Taylor Smith (Jesuit), Theo Kennedy and Dylan Kennedy (Jesuit), Jeffery Gasser and Mario Sanchez (Rummel), and Trevor Lew and James Sampognaro (Jesuit).
In the girls' draw, Mount Carmel and Assumption High are the favored teams in the regional tournament. Mount Carmel is led by defending champion Ellen Edwards, with her top competition expected to come from Paige Blanchard (Assumption), Connor Murphy (Mount Carmel) and Kaylyn Blosser (Dominican). Mount Carmel also has the returning doubles champions in Meghan de Baroncelli and Gabrielle Roe. That duo will have to fend off bids by teammates Janie Lester and Annie Lavie, as well as Allison Gravios and Ainsly Crochet (Assumption), Savina Nguyen and Caroline Nelson (Dominican), Michelle Bordes and Claire Jensen (Chapelle), and Katie Blanchard and Brooke Landry (Assumption).
In last year's action, Jesuit earned the boys championship while Mount Carmel collected the girls crown. The Blue Jays won the boys' crown with a victory over Archbishop Rummel, while Mount Carmel upended Assumption.
In individual action, Rummel's Brock Turnbull took home the boys' championship with a win over Taylor Smith from Jesuit, while Mount Carmel's Ellen Edwards held off Indi Mire from Thibodaux for the girls' singles title. In boys' doubles action, Jordan Ezell and Gerard Suhor from Jesuit captured the championship over Stephen Joubert and Cameron Nodier from Brother Martin. Mount Carmel also registered the girls' doubles championship as Meghan deBaroncelli and Gabrielle Roe defeated Erin Hebert and Paige Blanchard from Assumption in the finals.
