Woods led the Yellow Jackets to a second-place finish at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championship on Feb. 21. Xavier finished eight points behind state champ St. Thomas Aquinas as Woods had three first-place efforts and a third place. She won the 400-meter dash for the second year in a row with a time of 59.12 and finished third in the 55-meter dash at 7.2 seconds. She also was part of two winning relays teams - the 4x200 squad which posted a time of 1:46.97 and the 4x400 group which finished at 4:17.58.
In addition to her athletic success, Woods is ranked first in her class and is considering attending Notre Dame, Tulane or Columbia.
The senior standout will be in action this weekend at Tad Gormley Stadium at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Track & Field Classic on Friday and Saturday.
Woods edged six other candidates for the honor: Xavier University men's tennis star Hassan Abbas (perfect 6-0 record in singles and doubles); Tulane women's basketball junior guard Roshaunda Barnes (12.6 points per game in leading Green Wave to a 6-2 month); Nicholls State women's basketball guard Ricshanda Bickham (21.0 points per game while setting the school's single-season record for steals); Arkansas-Little Rock women's basketball forward Chastity Reed (New Orleans product who averaged 26.6 points and 9.5 rebounds in perfect month for the Trojans); UNO men's swimmer Mark Schindler (Sun Belt Co-Swimmer of the Year after winning the 100- and 200-meter breast strokes for the Privateers); and Loyola women's basketball forward Trenese Smith (Wolfpack's all-time leading scorer averaged 17.7 points per game and 6.1 rebounds).
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
