LSU's Schimpf Collects Amateur Athlete of the Month Honor

LSU junior Ryan Schimpf has been named the Greater New Orleans Amateur Athlete of the Month for June, the Allstate Sugar Bowl announced on Thursday.

A product of St. Paul's High School in Covington, Schimpf played a huge role in the LSU baseball team winning the NCAA College World Series. In eight games (two in the NCAA Super Regional and six at the College World Series), he went 11-for-30 (.367) with four home runs, three doubles, 10 runs batted in and 12 runs scored. LSU went 7-1 during the month and won the national championship with an 11-4 victory over Texas on June 24 in Omaha.
The junior, who hit .348 for the season with a team-best 22 round trippers, was drafted in the fifth round by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and the Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee, on Friday, July 23, 2010.
