First Round Action at Sugar Bowl CYO Tourney Wraps Up

The Allstate Sugar Bowl CYO Basketball Tournament tipped off Wednesday night at three schools in the New Orleans-metro area. This year marks the 58th year of the tournament.
At Holy Cross, the host Tigers upended Shaw, 52-44, behind Darrin James and Chris Kennie, who combined for 25 points. Shaw guard Derrick Ellis led all scorers with 24 points. Holy Cross will meet East St. John on Thursday evening. The Wildcats handed St. Thomas Aquinas its first loss of the season, 50-41, behind a 6-of-10 performance from behind the three-point arc.
At Brother Martin's Bobby Conlin Gym, the home-standing Crusaders shot 60 percent from the field in a 76-66 victory over Northshore. Jordan Cornish led the way with 19 points, while Myron Chapman scored 11 and Jalen Gray and Bryan Boudreaux each tallied 10. Jonathan Richardson led Northshore with 25 points, while Brandon Eddlestone collected 17 points with 13 rebounds. In the early game at Brother Martin, defending tournament champion St. Augustine cruised over Karr, 53-36. Roland Daniels led all scorers with 12 points while Karr had 11 from Harry Dilosa.
Newman posted a 45-36 victory over Jesuit as the Blue Jays were the lone team to lose a home game. Duke Douglas scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Greenies, while Michael Hagen Daniel scored 12 and Kyle Lewis scored 10. Matt Felger led the Blue Jays with 12. In the early game at Jesuit, Rummel topped Bonnabel in a barnburner, 48-46, as Keith Fulton knocked down nine fourth-quarter free throws, including a pair with 37 seconds to go. Montel James led Bonnabel with 14 points.
Action continues at the same sites tonight with games at 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
