Gray averaged 17.8 points per game in the month of January, leading the Wolfpack to a 5-3 record. His month was highlighted by a career-high 34 points against Faulkner on Jan. 20, a game in which he connected on 8-of-10 three-point shots. He followed that up with a 28-point performance against Belhaven two nights later, prompting him to be named the SSAC Player of the Week and the NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week. Gray is currently third in the nation in three-point shooting at nearly 50 percent.
Mathieu, a graduate of St. Augustine High School in New Orleans, was named the Cotton Bowl's Most Outstanding Defensive Player in LSU's 41-24 win over Texas A&M on Jan. 7. The freshman led the Tigers with seven tackles, one sack for an 8-yard loss, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery with a 10-yard return, and an interception. His interception and fumble recovery/return came on Texas A&M's final two possessions of the game and help secure LSU's victory.
Also nominated for the January honor were basketball standouts Kendall Timmons from Tulane, Eric Weary from Warren Easton High School and Malik Morgan from John Curtis.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Selection Committee has been selecting an Amateur Athlete of the Month each month since 1958. The athlete must be a native of the greater New Orleans area or must compete for a team in the metropolitan region in order to be eligible. Each of the monthly award winners will be honored in the summer at the Greater New Orleans Sports Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Ceremony, hosted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl.
