Fifth Annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic Scheduled for Jan. 29-30

Thursday, January 20, 2011

The fifth annual Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic will be held at Lafreniere Park on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 29 and 30. A regional event, the classic will feature 32 teams at four boys' levels: varsity, junior varsity, freshman and middle school. In addition, there will be a collegiate lacrosse showcase as the teams from Florida State University and the University of Texas will meet on Saturday evening at 7:30 p.m. at Pan Am Stadium. Admission to the college game will be $5 for adults and children. Admission will be free to anyone wearing an Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic shooter shirt.

Tournament action begins on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and will continue to 5 p.m. Sunday's action will also begin at 8:30 a.m. with the Championship tentatively scheduled for 2 p.m. A full schedule will be available at www.AllstateSugarBowl.org the week before the event.

The inaugural Allstate Sugar Bowl lacrosse event in 2007 had eight teams participating. Since that time, the Classic has grown to a capacity slate of nearly 30 teams. Recognized as one of the fastest growing team sports in the United States, lacrosse has seen youth participation grow over 500 percent since 1999 to nearly 250,000. No sport has grown faster at the high school level over the last 10 years and there are now an estimated 200,000 high school players. The high-speed game is also a fan favorite, drawing crowds of as many as 50,000 for NCAA Final Four games.

The dominant team in the history of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Lacrosse Classic has been Klein High School from Houston, which has captured the last four titles. New Orleans-area schools scheduled to participate in this year's event include Archbishop Rummel High School, Brother Martin High School, Jesuit High School, Mandeville High School and St. Paul's High School. Lafayette High School and St. Thomas More High from Lafayette will also be in action as well as Baton Rouge Catholic. A newcomer to the event is Taylor High School from outside Houston.
