The Week in Review

Here's a brief look at the highlights of the sixth week of the college football season, a week which featured the No. 1 team in the country losing, four other teams suffering their first losses and LSU once again pulling off a miracle. The rankings used in this recap are the AP rankings from prior to the games.

SURPRISE SURPRISE
#19 South Carolina 35, #1 Alabama 21: Steve Spurrier gets one of the biggest upset victories of his career as the Gamecocks start fast and finish strong in an impressive performance against an Alabama team which was facing its third straight nationally-ranked opponent. It was the Tide's first regular season loss since 2007.

Oregon State 29, #9 Arizona 27: The Beavers were only 2-2, but both losses are to top five teams and they show their ability by jumping ahead early against the Wildcats and holding on for the victory.

Illinois 33, Penn State 13: Neither team is ranked, but still quite a surprise to see Ron Zook's Illinois squad pound Joe Paterno's injury-depleted Penn State squad.

FANTASTIC FINISHES
#12 LSU 33, #14 Florida 29: Much-maligned Les Miles uses a fake field goal to set up the game-winning touchdown pass in the final seconds as the Tigers pick up a huge win on the road after LSU's offense shows progress with 385 yards against a solid Gator defense.

RIVALRY GAMES
#11 Arkansas 24, Texas A&M 17: Two old Southwest Conference foes meet for the second of 10 times at Cowboys Stadium and Ryan Mallett throws for three first-half touchdowns before the Hog defense ices the victory with an interception in the end zone on the game's final play.

#23 Florida State 45, #13 Miami 17: In the long-running rivalry, the last nine meetings have been decided by 10 or fewer points; not this time, however, as the Seminoles pile up 291 rushing yards and blow out the Hurricanes on the road.

#17 Michigan State 34, #18 Michigan 17: First time this century that these rivals meet as unbeatens and Michigan State shuts down the Denard Robinson show (3 interceptions, season-low 88 rushing yards) while piling up 519 yards of total offense.

New Mexico State 16, New Mexico 14: Two winless programs which rank near the bottom of the country in nearly every statistical category meet in a Land of Enchantment battle, the home-standing Aggies win it with a field goal with two minutes to go.

RUNNING WILD
#7 Nebraska 48, Kansas State 13: Kansas State falls from the undefeated ranks as Nebraska's Taylor Martinez runs for 241 yards and four touchdowns and the Huskers continue to assert themselves in the national picture.

#8 Auburn 37, Kentucky 34: Quarterback Cameron Newton registers another huge game, rushing for 197 yards and four TDs as Auburn boots the game-winning field goal with two seconds remaining.

#21 Nevada San Jose State: Running back Vai Taua records 196 rushing yards and three touchdowns, while quarterback Colin Kaepernick chips in with 91 yards and two scores on the ground.

#25 Air Force 49, Colorado State 27: The option based Air Force offense actually threw nine times, including a pair of long TD passes, but still rushed 47 times for 243 yards.

OLD-FASHIONED QUARTERBACK PLAY
#2 Ohio State 38, Indiana 10: A quarterback who often beats foes with his feet, Terrelle Pryor continues to prove his overall ability by throwing for a career-best 334 yards while the Buckeye defense shuts down Indiana's potent attack and moves into the nation's top ranking.

#22 Oklahoma State 54, UL Lafayette 28: Brandon Weeden completes 29-of-47 passes for 351 yards and five touchdowns as the Cowboys remain undefeated.

STYLE POINTS
#4 Boise State 57, Toledo 14: The Broncos make a case to move up in the standings by burying Toledo (which came in 3-2), piling up 501 yards of offense and allowing only 286.

#10 Utah 68, Iowa State 27: The Utes strut their stuff in a blowout of a Big 12 foe, tallying 31 second-quarter points and 593 yards of total offense.

GETTING DEFENSIVE
#3 Oregon 43, Washington State 23: Defense is referring to Washington State, the Pac-10 doormat which was expected to give up a boatload of points to the potent Duck offense - 43 is well below the Ducks' average. Oregon did lose starting quarterback Darron Thomas to injury in the first half.

#5 TCU 45, Wyoming 0: The Horned Frogs post their second consecutive shutout, holding the Cowboys to 191 total yards.

#24 Missouri 26, Colorado 0: Twenty years after the famous Fifth Down Game, these two teams meet again and undefeated Mizzou has no need for extra downs in the blowout victory.

#11 Arkansas at #7 Auburn: Another monster showdown in the SEC, these two West Division rivals will be looking to take over the spotlight after Alabama's loss this week.

#1 Ohio State at #18 Wisconsin: Wisconsin's dominant running attack looked impressive in a win over Minnesota, but Terrelle Pryor and Ohio State will be a much more formidable foe.

Texas at #5 Nebraska: Once expected to be a possible preview of the Big 12 title game, but Texas has struggled to make up for the loss of Colt McCoy and Nebraska has looked exceptional with redshirt freshman Taylor Martinez running its buzz saw offense.

#15 Iowa at Michigan: Michigan and Denard Robinson have been a hot story around the nation this year, but after losing to Michigan State this week, they face an even tougher defense in Iowa, which had a bye week to prepare.

#21 Missouri at Texas A&M: Missouri remains undefeated but Texas A&M, despite being a disappointment so far, will probably be the Tigers toughest opponent to date.

#20 Oklahoma State at Texas Tech: Should be a big-time shootout in Lubbock; the teams combined for 99 points in their victories this weekend.

California at USC: Cal hasn't received much attention in the potent Pac-10 this year, but the Bears crushed UCLA this week and will be looking for their first victory over USC since 2003.

BYU at #4 TCU: BYU's offense has been struggling mightily and now they face TCU, which ranks among the best in the nation on defense after posting back-to-back shutouts.

#19 Nevada at Hawaii: Shootout in the Islands; Nevada's Colin Kaepernick is a spectacular dual-threat QB and Hawaii's Bryant Moniz is beginning to make a name for himself.

From the players currently on the Watch List for the Manning Award, here are some of the standout stars from week six:

Matt Barkley, USC
(28-of-45, 390 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT)
All three of Barkley's touchdowns tie the score and he drives the team for a go-ahead TD with 1:15 to go, but it's not enough as Stanford boots a game-winning field goal with two clicks left.

Andy Dalton, TCU
(14-of-17, 270 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT)
Another very efficient performance from Dalton who directs the TCU offense to a 45-0 win over Wyoming.

Ricky Dobbs, Navy
(8-of-19, 94 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT)
Dobbs didn't put up the best numbers, but he also added 100 yards and a pair of touchdowns on the ground; it was his six-yard TD pass which lifted Navy to a 28-27 win over Wake Forest with 42 seconds to go.

Andrew Luck, Stanford
(20-of-24, 295 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT)
Luck has an exceptional performance, but the key was driving the Cardinal the length of the field in under a minute to set them up for the game-winning field goal in a 37-35 victory over USC.

Terrelle Pryor, Ohio State
(24-of-30, 334 yards, 3 TDs, 0 INT)
Pryor piles up a career-high in passing yards while leading the Buckeyes to 38-10 blowout of Indiana.

While 33 quarterbacks are on the Manning Award Watch List, additional players will be added on Oct. 25. Here's a look at the best performances from players making a bid to be added.

Stephen Garcia, South Carolina
(17-of-20, 201 yards, 3 TDs, 1 INT)
Garcia leads the Gamecocks to their first-ever victory over a No. 1 team in the nation, upending Alabama, 35-21.

Ryan Katz, Oregon State
(30-of-42, 393 yards, 2 TDs, 1 INT)
The sophomore also rushes for a score as he leads the Beavers to a 29-27 upset of No. 9 Arizona.

Taylor Martinez, Nebraska
(5-of-7, 128 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT)
The redshirt freshman rushes 15 times for 241 yards and four TDs as Nebraska crushes previously undefeated Big 12 North rival Kansas State, 48-13.

Cameron Newton, Auburn
(13-of-21, 210 yards, 0 TDs, 1 INT)
Undefeated Auburn has a dogfight with Kentucky, but Newton rushes for 198 yards and four TDs as well as driving the team into range for the game-winning field goal with two seconds to go in a 37-34 win.

Taylor Potts, Texas Tech
(42-of-59, 462 yards, 4 TDs, 1 INT)
Potts leads Texas Tech to a 45-38 victory over Baylor as the Red Raiders avoid their first-ever 0-3 start in Big 12.
