NFF Honors Local High School Football Players

The Allstate Sugar Bowl Chapter of the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame held its 2010 Awards Luncheon at the Louisiana Superdome in the Bienville Club Room on Tuesday, March 23.

The event honored 26 local high school football players for their achievements in the classroom and on the football field. Two of the student-athletes, Maurice Rothschild from Warren Easton High and John Wenzel from mandeville High, were selected to receive Allstate Sugar Bowl Scholarships for $2,500 each. In addition, two local businessmen were recognized for their contributions to the community and the sport of football.

Mickey Loomis, the executive vice-president and general manager of the New Orleans Saints, was honored with the Distinguished American Award, accepted on his behalf by Saints Director of Pro Scouting Ryan Pace. Loomis, who has been with the Saints for 10 years, was a key architect in the building of the Saints team which thrilled the city, the region and the nation with its tremendous Super Bowl run this past season.

Bill Bumgarner, a long-time prep sports writer, received the Contribution to Amateur Football Award. Bumgarner has been covering sports in the Crescent City since 1972, working for the New Orleans States-Item, the New Orleans Times-Picayune and NewOrleans.com. He has covered every top-classification high school state championship football game since 1975.

Archie Manning, the national chairman of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame, recognized each of the 26 student athletes at the event. The winners were chosen from a nominated group of talented scholar athletes from the New Orleans area.

Philip Helmstetter (Archbishop Rummel H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Honor Roll every quarter since freshman year, consistent recipient of Renaissance Recognition. Athletic Awards: District MVP 2009, Metro MVP 2009, All-State MVP 2009, All-District 2008, All-East Bank 2008, Football Team Captain. Extracurricular Activities: Operation Head Start, Student Council President, Newspaper Reporter, Volunteers at St. Benilde School and "Special Connections" (special needs individuals) and member of Big Brother Club.

Lyndon "Lance" Lasiter (Archbishop Rummel H.S.)
Academic Awards:
National Honor Society, Honor Roll recipient every quarter, Renaissance Card Recipient. Athletic Awards: All-District. Extracurricular Activities: Member of Youth Rebuilding New Orleans, Operation Head Start, Student Council Representative.

Evan Anthony Clark (Ben Franklin H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Principal's Honor Roll, National Achievement Semi-Finalist, Taylor Award. Athletic Awards: Second Team All-District Linebacker, 2008 Offensive MVP, 2009 Team MVP, two-year letterman. Extracurricular Activities: Key Club Member.

Jared Johnson (Ben Franklin H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Who's Who Among American High School students, National Achievement Awards, four-time Taylor Award recipient, excellence award on National Spanish Exam, Honor Roll for all four years. Athletic Awards: Rookie of the year as a sophomore, selected as Second Team All-District Defensive Back, team co-captain, three-year letterman. Extracurricular Activities: Four-year Student Council Representative, Academic Games Member, Close-Up program participant, volunteered service to the Lt. Governor's reelection campaign in 2007, volunteered for Arbor Day Activities

Carroll Barriere (Bonnabel H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Honor Roll, Gates Millenium. Athletic Awards: All-District, Letterman, Captain. Extracurricular Activities:  FCA, Key Club, Student Council.

Taylor James Hebert (Brother Martin H.S.)
Academic Awards:
High School Academic Scholarship, Principal's Honor Roll, National Honor Society, Academic Letterman, National Merit Honorable Mention, National Society of High School Scholars. Athletic Awards: Three-year letterman,  2009 ABC WGNO Scholar Athlete of the Week, 2009 Andy Douglass Memorial Award (Football team's highest scholastic award), 2009 Football Coaches Award. Extracurricular Activities: Students Against Drugs and its Effects on Relationships member, Student Ambassador, Volunteers at Chateau Notre Dame Nursing Home and St. Michael's School for Exceptional Children Summer Camp.

Surgene Troost (Brother Martin H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Five-year honor roll student, High School Academic Scholarship, National Honor Society, Academic scholarship offers to Auburn and Louisiana Tech. Athletic Awards: Three-year letterman, Team Captain, 2009 Coaches Award. Extracurricular Activities: Divine Mercy Catholic Youth Organization, Teen Cross, Operation Helping Hands, Executive Board Member of Student Ministry.

Tyler Scott (Covington H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Honor Roll 2006-2010, Academic Achiever 2006-2010, Taylor Scholar Award, WGNO Scholar Athlete of the Week. Athletic Awards: All-District Quarterback. Extracurricular Activities: FCA Officer, Tutor.

David Scheuermann III (Ecole Classique H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Four-year honor roll student, National Honor Society, LHSAA Academic All-State. Athletic Awards: All-District (junior and senior year), four-year letterman, team captain.

DeJon Steven Holmes (East Jefferson H.S.)
Academic Awards:
Honor roll. Athletic Awards: First Team All-District 9-4A, All East Bank first team running back, led his team to regional round of state playoffs 2009. Extracurricular Activities: Big Brother program, Spirit Club, Class Council, Campaign Volunteer.

Evan Luke (Fountainbleau H.S.)
